福建师范大学附属中学创办于1881年，坐落于福州市仓山区对湖路，前身是三所私立教会学校（英华中学、华南女中、陶淑女中），1951年三校由人民政府接办合并为一所新型的公立学校，1973年起定为今名。福建师大附中是福建省首批办好的重点中学之一，1994年被省教委确认为省一级达标学校，1998年根据福州市教委关于初高中分设的决定，停止初中招生。2003年9月被省教育厅确认为首批省级示范性普通高级中学。学校先后获批“全国青少年科技创新大赛科技教育创新十佳学校”、“科技部科技基础性专项重大项目实验学校”、“宋庆龄少年儿童科技发明示范基地”、“全国中小学国防教育示范学校”、“全国德育先进学校”、“全国艺术教育先进单位”、“国家汉语国际推广基地”、“福建省科普教育基地”、“福建省普通高中新课程实验样本校”、“福建省空军飞行员早期培训基地”等。2020年被评为“全国文明校园”。2022年，学校复办初中。2022年4月，在全省中小学校率先试行中小学校党组织领导的校长负责制，2023年，学校被确定为“新时代中小学校党建工作示范学校建设单位”。
学校现有校园面积89915平方米，建筑面积78315平方米。教学设施完善，师资力量雄厚。现有在岗教职工281人，其中正高级教师8人，特级教师7人，高级教师129人，106位教师具有硕士学位，省、市级领衔名师、骨干教师73人。
百卌年来，福建师大附中为高等学校和社会各界培育输送了数以万计的优秀学生和建设人才。老一辈校友中，有以侯德榜、陈景润等17位院士和经济学家陈岱孙为代表的大批著名专家学者；有以中共福建省常委，新四军驻榕办事处主任王助、中共福州地委首任书记方尔灏等为代表的大批民主革命志士。现在，一批批中青年校友正成长为祖国各条建设战线的栋梁之材。
143年的办学历程，学校形成了“革命的传统”“学习的传统”“全面发展的传统”，树立“以人为本，立德为先，全面发展，求实创新”的办学理念，秉承“以天下为己任”的校训，弘扬“文明、勤奋、求实、创新”的校风，以校本课程、研究性学习为依托，以科技竞赛为推力，重视学生实践与创新能力的培养，打造了高质量、特色化、多元化的发展道路，实现了学生综合素质的全面发展，在教育教学中取得了突出成绩，为我省基础教育事业做出了突出贡献。1985年以来，已先后在国际中学生学科竞赛中获得16面奖牌（其中国际奥林匹克竞赛获8金5银1铜计14面奖牌，位列全省同类校前茅）。近年来，学校首创竞赛工作室制度，设立五学科竞赛工作室，组建竞赛教练“梦之队”，精心打造KEEP课程，附中学子在五学科中学生奥林匹克竞赛及科技创新大赛中入围省赛、入围国赛的项目领跑全省。学校矢志于高质量的自我超越，坚持“五育并举、因材施教”的原则，构建了“润德修身，心怀天下”的课程体系，教育教学硕果累累，教学质量得到广大学生和家长高度认可。在全国中小学文艺展演活动中屡获全国一等奖，参与各项省、市级中学生体育赛事斩获良多，美育和体育成为学校办学的新亮点。

1986年8月，校党政工联席会议通过决议，确定“以天下为己任”为我校校训。
“天下”本意为“国家”，现也扩大为指“世界”。“以天下为己任”，就是以国家大事、世界大事为己任。在今天，我们应用这句话，就是要求师生要有“担负起天下的兴亡”这样一种博大的胸怀、气魄和献身精神，为“建设四化、振兴中华”，并为进一步实现共产主义的远大理想而努力奋斗。
制定校训“以天下为己任”，目的在于体现我校办学的根本宗旨和师生员工的共同信念，更好地贯彻“教育要面向现代化、面向世界、面向未来”的精神，激励全校师生和广大校友不断发扬我校光荣的革命传统和优良的学习传统，为国家的兴旺、民族的振兴而建功立业。
“以天下为己任”，语出晋初陈寿撰《三国志》一书。陈寿在该志《魏书》二十五卷《杨阜传》中，对曹操手下的刺史、太守杨阜作评价时写道：“阜常侃然以天下为己任”。古人的语言，凡具有科学因素和社会进步意义者，后人则赋以新的时代内涵，予以广泛应用。古语今用者，不胜枚举。宋代范仲淹《岳阳楼记》中的“先天下之忧而忧，后天下之乐而乐”，宋代陆游《病起书怀》中的“位卑未敢忘忧国”，清代顾炎武《日知录》中的“保天下者，匹夫之贱，与有责焉耳矣”，即“天下兴亡，匹夫有责”，都成为今天脍炙人口的进行理想教育和爱国主义教育的名言。我校选定“以天下为己任”为校训的用意和根据亦在于此。

The school occupies an area of 62,623 square meters(around 95 mu),and its buildings have a total floor space of 51,795 square meters.Its excellent facilities are well matched by a distinguished staff.Among its 167 faculty members 79 are high-ranking teachers,27 have the title of“master teacher,”and 18 are with a master's degree.The school has now a total of over 1,900 students divided into 38 classes,of which two are especially set up for the preparatory training of airmen.
More than 140 years have passed since one of the original schools--Anglo-ChineseCollege--was founded in 1881.During this period,the School has graduated tens of thousands of outstanding students,many of whom went on to study in universities or functioned remarkably in all walks of life.Its distinguished alumni include world-famous chemist Hou Debang,mathematician Chen Jingrun,and 12 academicians of the ChineseAcademy of Sciences and the ChineseAcademy of Engineering.Among its graduates one also finds such luminaries as Lin Sen,a leading figure of the Revolution of 1911 and Chairman of the National Government of the Republic of China,Wang Zhu,a member of the Provincial Standing Committee of the Communist Party and the director of Fuzhou Office of the New Fourth Army;and many other notable revolutionaries during the long struggle for a New China.Right now,large numbers of its alumni,young and middle-aged,are playing crucial roles in different fields for the modernization of China.
The current age of reform and opening-up sees the School redouble its efforts in pursuit of excellence and in carrying on its fine tradition.Devoted to the ideal of a humanistic education,it has adopted as its motto“OUR WORLD,OUR DUTY”and promoted as its guiding values“CIVILITY,DILIGENCE,PRACTICALITY,AND CREATIVITY.”The School gives priority to moral education,placing emphasis on all-round cultivation of the students.As a result,remarkable achievements have been made in refining school culture and in implementing quality education.The school has been awarded 14 national titles,such as National Moral Education Model School,Advanced Collectivity of National Youth Scientific and Technological Activity,National Students Military Training Model Unit,and Advanced Collectivity of National Sports.The school has received over 150 provincial or local honorary titles,such as the ProvincialCivilizedSchool and the LocalCivilizedSchool.Since 1985,it has won 15 medals in various international subject contests for high school students(14 of which are medals for the International Academic Olympiad,including 8 gold,5 silver and 1 bronze medal,accounting for half of the medal of this kind won by all schools in Fujian).Each year,over 150 students on an average win prizes in various national,provincial and local level contests.For years,the percentage of its graduates being admitted by colleges and universities has been among the highest throughout the province as well as in the city.
At present,the school is making every effort to build itself into one of the first national models for high schools.
